Examining Characteristics, Frequencies, Hours of Volunteering Among Korean Older Adults£ºPromoting Volunteerism
Lee Hyun-Kee

Abstract
The thesis aims to examine the characteristics of old-age volunteers, yearly total frequencies, and average hours spent in a volunteer activity. Also the paper tries to estimate the effects of influential factors on volunteering frequencies and average hours of dependent variables. The research uses, as analysis subjects, 912 older adults who is randomly sampled from Korean standard households and is more than 55 year old. The study uses Generalized Linear Model for the analysis. The frequencies and average hours of volunteering are negative binomial distributive and gamma distributive respectively so that negative binomial regression and gamma regression model are used to identify the affecting factors. The analysis results shows that yearly total frequencies were 11.83 times, and average hours per a participation was 3.78 hour. At the same time, human, social, and cultural resources variables were identified as the factors of frequency and hour for volunteering. The paper discusses that the opportunity cost of volunteer hours is very lower than wage and that age effects work to keep total volunteering hours by regulating frequencies and hours. Finally, the paperproposes several policy alternatives to increase volunteering hours among Korean older adults.
